It has always been difficult to enter journalism and it always will be. Now though it is possible for school leavers to apply for editorial apprenticeships without going to university.

At the Evening Standard and Independent we have for six years run editorial diversity bursaries to give keen, dedicated school leavers with potential for journalistic talent an opportunity to become apprentices and take an intensive 20-week course followed by on-the job training. Other publishing groups run similar schemes.
